…breathtaking dramatic aptitude and undulating vocal exchanges from a very impressive Susannah Lawergren (soprano) and Andrew O’Connor (bass)as the Soul and Jesus. Their duets ‘Wenn kommst du, mein Heil?’ and ‘Mein Freund ist mein’ were incredibly touching, especially with the bass positioned at a distance during the latter to depict the advancing Saviour.

Sydney soprano Susannah Lawergren has developed a reputation for her versatility, “stunning vocal expression” and “beautifully clear soprano”. She has worked with some of the foremost ensembles in Australia including Ensemble Offspring, Opera Australia, Australia Ensemble, Cantillation, Sydney Chamber Opera, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Salut! Baroque, Willoughby Orchestra and Hourglass Ensemble and international ensembles like Voces8, the Wallfisch Ensemble and Forma Antiqva. From 2011-2019 she was a full-time member of the Song Company, singing an incredibly diverse range of music around Australia and this rejoined the group for their 2023 Season around MSW, Melbourne, Hobart and Canberra.

Susannah has a busy performing life as a soloist around Sydney and Australia, performing oratorio, art song, opera and contemporary music. Since 2016, she has been a regular soloist and ensemble member with the Bach Akademie Australia. Limelight Magazine recently said “the lightlight is Susannah Lawergren’s achingly beautiful narration of the Qui Tollis” of their programme “Bach at Easter” 2023. In 2019 she and harpist Georgia Lowe formed harp/soprano duo Lawergren&Lowe and this year they perform a new programme “If Music be the Food of Love”, starting at the Newcastle Music Festival for Newcastle Food Month. She has also performed at many of the major festivals in Australia, including the Sydney Festival, Adelaide Festival and this year will sing Dvorak’s Moravian Duets with soprano Anna Fraser and pianist/director Roland Peelman at her tenth Canberra International Music Festival. She has recorded for Hyperion Records and has appeared many times on ABC Classic FM and Fine Music FM, including Tamara-Anna Cislowska’s Duet. Known also for her compelling stagecraft, she has sung with physical theatre troupes such as Legs on the Wall, choreographer Paulina Quinteros, and with Australian Dance Artists in renowned artist Ken Unsworth’s studio theatre.

Recent highlights include singing Elena Kats-Chernin’s Wild Swans while flying harnessed through the air above Willoughby Orchestra with astonishing aerialists Legs on the Wall, working with composers Ross Edwards and Elena Kats-Chernin on music freshly composed for her, singing Schubert’s Winterreise with pianists Anna Rutkowska-Schock and Bradley Gilchrist and performing with harpist Georgia Lowe for Resonate at the Art Gallery of NSW. A memorable highlight was being the soprano soloist with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in Hans Zimmer’s Blue Planet II for an audience of 8000 film music fans, Later this year she will return to Art Song Canberra with pianist Bernadette Harvey to perform a new song cycle written for them by Ross Edwards.
